Food-Grade Cardboard Boxes — Standards You Need to Know Before Ordering
The food industry is one of the most demanding sectors in terms of packaging—not only for food safety and hygiene but also due to increasingly stringent regulations in Vietnam and export markets. Selecting the wrong food packaging can not only damage goods but also violate food safety regulations, lead to rejection at export checkpoints, or result in product recalls in import markets. This article summarizes the most important standards for food-grade cardboard boxes that businesses need to know before placing an order.

What Makes Food-Grade Cardboard Boxes Different from Regular Boxes
In terms of construction, food-grade cardboard boxes do not necessarily differ completely in material from regular cardboard boxes. The difference lies in the ink, adhesive, and surface coating—components that may come into contact with or directly touch the food inside.
Regular cardboard boxes often use mineral oil-based inks, industrial adhesives, and surface treatment chemicals that are not controlled for food safety. Under food storage conditions—especially at high temperatures, high humidity, or with acidic foods—these chemicals can migrate from the packaging into the food, causing chemical contamination invisible to the naked eye.
5 Most Important Standards
1. Inks Must Meet Food Safety Standards
Ink is the most important factor to control when ordering food-grade cardboard boxes. Standard inks often contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and mineral oils that can migrate from the cardboard box into the food—a phenomenon known as "set-off" or "migration" in packaging printing technology.
Common international standards for food packaging inks include the Swiss Ordinance (Switzerland—considered the strictest standard in the world), EuPIA (European Inks Association), and the FDA (USA). For the domestic market, Circular 34/2014/TT-BYT of the Ministry of Health specifies the safety requirements for food contact packaging.
When ordering food-grade cardboard boxes, require the manufacturer to provide written confirmation that the inks meet the food safety standards applicable to the market where you sell your products.
2. Do Not Use Recycled Paper for the Food-Contact Layer
Recycled paper may contain impurities from the recycling process, including ink, heavy metals, bleaching agents, and industrial chemicals from the paper's previous life cycle. The EU and many international markets clearly state that recycled paper must not be used for the paper layer in direct contact with food.
In Vietnam, most cardboard boxes use virgin paper and recycled paper. For food-grade boxes without inner packaging (such as a separate plastic liner or PE bag), the inner paper layer (the layer in contact with the food) must be virgin paper or certified food-safe.
If the food is already packaged inside (in plastic bags, plastic containers, bottles, or jars), this requirement may be waived because the cardboard box only serves as outer shipping packaging and does not come into direct contact with the food.
3. Suitable Strength for Food Characteristics
Fresh, frozen, and high-moisture foods place special requirements on the moisture resistance of cardboard boxes:
Fresh food and produce: Boxes need ventilation holes to release heat and reduce internal moisture, while the outer paper layer must be durable enough not to soften when exposed to moisture from the food.
Frozen food: Boxes must withstand temperatures from -18°C to -25°C without becoming brittle or losing their load-bearing capacity. Some freezer boxes require an additional moisture-resistant outer coating because temperature differences in cold storage cause condensation.
Dry food (rice, sugar, salt, spices): Boxes must resist moisture from the environment to prevent the food inside from absorbing moisture, clumping, or deteriorating during storage and transport.
4. Suitable Dimensions and Load Capacity
Food-grade cardboard boxes often need to be stacked multiple layers high in cold storage or refrigerated trucks—requiring a higher stacking strength (BCT) than regular goods. Specifically:
For modern trade food distribution (supermarkets, retail chains): boxes must meet the minimum BCT required by the distributor—usually specified in the retailer's supplier guidelines.
For food exports: box dimensions should be optimized for standard pallet sizes (EUR pallet 1200×800mm or US pallet 1219×1016mm) to maximize the number of boxes per container and ensure stable stacking during ocean transport.
5. Labeling Requirements
Food packaging in Vietnam must comply with Decree 43/2017/ND-CP on goods labeling—including product name, ingredients, net weight, production date, expiration date, manufacturer information, and storage conditions. For food exports, labeling requirements vary significantly by import market and must be confirmed with the importing partner before placing an order for boxed goods.

Conclusion
Investing in the right cardboard boxes for food not only protects goods but also protects your brand and helps your business comply with legal regulations. The cost difference between regular cardboard boxes and food-grade boxes is usually negligible, so choosing the wrong packaging carries legal risks and can damage your brand.
