What Are Cardboard Boxes? A Comprehensive A-Z Guide for Businesses

0/5 (0 votes)

Carton boxes are the most widely used type of packaging in logistics, e-commerce, manufacturing, and export in Vietnam. From small online stores to large-scale manufacturers, carton boxes protect goods throughout transportation and storage. This article provides the most comprehensive guide to carton boxes — from their configuration and classification to choosing the right type and understanding essential technical specifications — helping businesses make accurate purchasing decisions and save costs.

1. What Is a Carton Box?

A carton box (also known as a corrugated box or paper carton) is a container made from corrugated paperboard — a material consisting of multiple layers of flat paper alternating with a central layer of sinewave-shaped fluting. This fluted configuration creates air pockets between the paper layers, giving carton boxes much better shock absorption, compression strength, and insulation properties than regular paper.

Carton boxes are widely used for many reasons: they are lighter than wooden and plastic boxes, easy to fold and assemble, can be printed directly with brand logos, and most importantly, are fully recyclable — aligning with the global trend toward sustainable packaging.

2. Structure of a Carton Box

Each paper carton is made up of three main components:

Outer liner: The outermost layer — the visible surface, which typically displays logos and brand information. The quality of this layer directly affects print sharpness and surface wear resistance.

Fluting layer (Medium/Fluting): The middle layer, formed into a continuous wave pattern — this layer provides the carton box with its rigidity and shock absorption capacity. The amplitude and frequency of the fluting determine the flute type (A, B, C, E, F), each with different technical characteristics.

Inner liner: The innermost layer, which comes into contact with the goods inside the box.

The number of stacked outer liners and fluting layers creates carton boxes with different layer counts: 3-layer, 5-layer, and 7-layer.

3. Classification of Carton Boxes by Number of Layers

3-layer carton boxes

Configuration:  2 outer liners + 1 middle fluting layer.

Features:  The lightest of the three types, with basic rigidity and load-bearing capacity. Lowest price.

Suitable for:

  • Light goods weighing under 5 kg
  • Fast-moving e-commerce order packaging
  • Clothing, fashion accessories, books, and office products
  • Gift boxes that do not need to withstand high loads

Not suitable for:    Heavy goods, long-distance interprovincial shipping, or goods that require high stacking.

5-layer carton boxes

Configuration:  3 outer liners + 2 alternating fluting layers.

Features:  The most common type on the market — offering a good balance between cost and load-bearing capacity. Approximately 2–3 mm thicker and significantly stronger than 3-layer boxes.

Suitable for:

  • Goods weighing 5–30 kg
  • Food, beverages, cosmetics, and household goods
  • Interprovincial shipping via J&T, GHTK, and Ninja Van
  • Distribution to supermarkets and retail chains
  • Online shopping on Shopee, TikTok Shop, and Lazada

Why choose them:  If you are unsure which type to choose, 5-layer boxes are always the safest option for most situations.

7-layer carton boxes

Configuration:  4 outer liners + 3 alternating fluting layers.

Features:  The thickest and strongest — they can replace wooden boxes in many cases. Although heavier, they offer superior load-bearing capacity.

Suitable for:

  • Heavy goods weighing over 30 kg
  • Electronic components, machinery, and industrial equipment
  • Export goods shipped in sea containers
  • Goods that need to be stacked in multiple layers in a warehouse
  • Replacing wooden boxes (no heat treatment required)

4. Classification by Paper Flute Type

The paper flute type directly affects the technical characteristics of the carton box — regardless of the number of layers:

Flute Flute Height Special Features Applications
A-Flute ~4.8 mm Best for shock absorption and cushioning Easy to open, suitable for electronics
B-Flute ~2.4 mm Good compression strength and surface quality Printing and gift boxes
C-Flute ~3.6 mm Balanced between A and B General-purpose and versatile
E-Flute ~1.2 mm Lightweight and aesthetically pleasing Retail stores and cosmetics
F-Flute ~0.8 mm Extra thick Premium boxes and food products

5. Paper Grammage — The Most Important Specification

Paper grammage (unit: g/m²) refers to the weight of one square meter of paper — reflecting the thickness and strength of each paper layer in the carton box. This is the most important specification, yet it is often overlooked when purchasing carton boxes.

Two 5-layer boxes of the same size but with different paper grammages can differ by up to 30% in load-bearing capacity — this is also why carton boxes of the same type vary in price among different suppliers.

Reference ranges:

  • 150–180 g/m²: Lightweight, suitable for light goods and low-cost options
  • 200–250 g/m²: Medium weight, most common
  • 300–400 g/m²: Heavyweight, suitable for heavy goods and export

Practical advice: When comparing prices among suppliers, always ask: "What is the grammage of each paper layer?" — this question helps you compare the true value rather than just the price.

6. ECT and BCT Ratings — Measuring Load-Bearing Capacity

ECT (Edge Crush Test): Measures the compression strength of the box edges — important for assessing stacking capacity in a warehouse. A higher ECT means the box can withstand more stacked layers.

BCT (Box Compression Test): Measures the total compression force the entire box can withstand before collapsing. Estimated formula: Total stacking load = BCT × 0.6

For large orders, ask the manufacturer to provide ECT/BCT certifications to ensure the boxes meet the promised standards.

7. How to Calculate Carton Box Dimensions

Carton box dimensions are calculated based on the internal dimensions in the order of: Length × Width × Height (in cm or mm).

Correct sizing rules:

  • The box should be 3–5 cm wider than the goods on each side to allow room for cushioning
  • Do not make the box more than 8–10 cm wider than the goods, as this can cause them to shift
  • For goods containing many small products: calculate the total volume of the goods + 20–30% for cushioning material

Practical example: For a product measuring 20 × 15 × 10 cm, choose a 26 × 21 × 16 cm box (6 cm wider on each side, providing enough room for PE wrapping).

8. Offset-Printed Carton Boxes — When to Use Them

Offset printing is the highest-quality printing method for carton boxes — producing sharp images and accurate colors, suitable for multi-color designs and complex brand logos.

Choose offset printing when:

  • The design features two or more colors or color gradients
  • The logo requires precise color matching with the brand identity
  • The boxes are used for display or exported to markets with high aesthetic requirements
  • The order quantity is 1,000 boxes or more to cover the cost of making the printing plates

Offset printing costs consist of two parts: The cost of making the printing plates (a one-time charge) + the unit price per box. There is no plate charge for subsequent reorders.

9. Export Carton Box Standards

Carton boxes used for export goods have higher requirements than those used domestically regarding:

  • Paper grammage: At least 200–300 g/m², depending on the market
  • ECT/BCT ratings: Must meet the standards of the importing market (the 41 Rule for the U.S., EuPIA for the EU)
  • Moisture protection: Sea containers experience fluctuating humidity — moisture-resistant coatings or higher paper grammage are required
  • Marking (brand labels): Must include all information required by each market's regulations
  • ISPM-15: Carton boxes do not require heat treatment like wooden boxes — a major advantage for export

10. How to Store Carton Boxes in a Warehouse

Proper storage helps carton boxes maintain their quality for 3–6 months:

  • Store boxes on pallets, at least 10–15 cm above the floor
  • Maintain a distance of 20–30 cm from walls to ensure proper air circulation
  • Maintain warehouse humidity between 45% and 65%
  • Avoid direct sunlight and high temperatures
  • Apply the FIFO (first-in, first-out) principle
  • Do not stack too many boxes, as this can cause deformation

11. How to Distinguish Good and Poor-Quality Carton Boxes

Perform a quick visual and tactile inspection before accepting a shipment:

Six signs of quality:

  1. Press your hand against the box — it should be rigid and spring back immediately
  2. The brown kraft paper surface should be evenly colored and free from peeling
  3. Cross-section: The fluting should be uniform, and the paper layers tightly bonded
  4. Drip water on the surface for 30 seconds — it should not absorb
  5. The ink should be free of defects and sharp
  6. The dimensions should be uniform, with less than 3 mm of variation between boxes
